AI is a powerful tool in your job search. With clever prompt engineering, you can access many useful features from ChatGPT or other LLMs for free. One great way to use AI is as an interview prep partner to improve your responses. You can use an LLM to generate questions, transcribe and analyze answers, and find areas for improvement.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a personalized mock interview partner. Make sure to start a new chat for each role to get tailored responses.
Use the LLM to generate interview questions
Give the model a prompt like
“Imagine you are the hiring manager for a UX Design role at Meta. You are interviewing a UX Designer for the below role (paste job description here). What questions would you ask?”
If you are interviewing with cross-functional team members you can ask the LLM to role play for those functions as well - for example, a Product Manager can ask what questions an Engineering Manager would ask.
Transcribe and analyze your responses
The best way to practice your answers is by speaking them out loud, not just through writing. Use the LLM’s speech-to-text feature to transcribe your responses. Stay in the same thread so the LLM retains the context and use a prompt like:
“Imagine you just asked me to tell you about a time that I had to make a decision with data. Please transcribe my response and evaluate it based on the following criteria: clarity, structure, and how well it answered the question.”
Find areas to improve
Once you have the transcription and analysis from the LLM, ask it how you could improve your response. It might suggest that you need to add more specifics, or be more concise. You can ask for general improvements or give it specific instructions if you know you tend to ramble, provide too much background explanation, or use industry jargon. An example prompt could be
“Give me a few suggestions to improve my response to make it more compelling”
From here you can treat it like a product - iterate until you feel like you have question-answer fit! The benefit of practicing with an LLM is that it won’t get tired of hearing the same answer over and over. For final polish and user acceptance testing - seek out a human partner to listen to your responses.
