It’s a competition game. It’s always a competition game. It doesn’t matter if there are 20 applicants or 2000 applicants, your goal stays the same - TO STAND OUT.
If you stand out in every step, you will be the last one standing in the end, right?!
There are ways for you to stand out in every step of your job search. Let’s start with the beginning of a job seeker’s journey - Networking.
#1 Networking
You are cold messaging hiring managers and recruiters on LinkedIn. Instead of using “Interested in XYZ position”, a subject line instantly buried among hundreds of the same ones, you carefully studied the job posting and called out one thing with an eye-catching sentence. How about “Design system enthusiast - Can we talk about buttons?” There, you stood out.
#2 Apply
You apply through a referral instead of the public application portal. You get the VIP treatment that guarantees a human recruiter reads your resume in 3-4 days.
If you can’t find referrals, no problem. Go ahead and apply, then try to identify the recruiter and hiring manager on LinkedIn, connect with them, and send them a message; at least they might recognize your name when they see your resume.
#3 Resume
Let’s talk about resumes. If you are a new grad, trust me, as long as you write simple and short sentences, follow the format of “Action+Result,” and your bullet points are logical, you are already standing out. I understand it’s easier said than done from case to case, but the recipe here is really not that complicated, and I can help you!
Congratulations! You already beat 80% of the candidates.
In my next post, I will continue this topic in the context of a portfolio, a crucial piece to make you stand out even more!
